What is A/B Testing?

A/B testing is a controlled experiment in which two versions of a web page, email, or app screen are shown to different segments of visitors simultaneously to determine which version drives more conversions.

Version A (the control) represents the current experience, while version B (the variant) introduces a single change — a different headline, button color, layout, or pricing display. Traffic is split randomly between the two, and the results are compared using statistical analysis to determine whether the difference in performance is meaningful or due to chance.

  2. Form a hypothesis — State what you expect to change and why (e.g., “Simplifying the checkout form from 6 fields to 3 will reduce cart abandonment because users cite form length as a friction point”).
  3. Calculate sample size — Determine how many visitors you need based on your baseline conversion rate and the minimum detectable effect you want to capture.
  4. Run the test — Split traffic evenly and let the test run until you reach the required sample size.
  5. Analyze results — Check for statistical significance (typically at 95% confidence) before declaring a winner.
